What To Do During Natural Disasters?

TORNADO

During a tornado, find a safe room built to withstand high winds. The next best protection is a small room with no windows on the lowest level of a sturdy building. Plan ahead by finding a sturdy building to shelter in before a tornado watch or warning

EARTHQUAKE

During an earthquake, DROP down to your hand and knees to prevent yourself from falling. COVER your head under a sturdy table or desk. HOLD onto the shelter you are under and be prepared to move if it moves during the earthquake.

TSUNAMI

Before a Tsunami, try to evacuate and get as far as possible. Get to hight ground, and if you are trapped inside of a building, climb to the top. Stay in your safe spot for at least 8 hours, and if you are in the water grab something that is floating.

FLOODS

During a flood, find safe shelter right away, and never drive, ride or walk through floodwater. Stack possessions, records, stock or equipment on benches and tables, placing electrical items on top. Stay off bridges over fast-moving water, and evacuate if told to do so. Listen to warnings and information from the local authorities.

HURRICANE

During a hurricane, stay informed by monitoring the storm via local radio, NOAA radio, TV, and internet. Secure your home and close storm shutters. Bring all things that are outside, inside or tied down in a secure spot. Identify a safe space on lower floors but not the basement; evacuate when instructed by authorities. Turn around, don't drown – avoid flood waters.
